About Dave Cox Photography

You’ve been a professional photographer for a number of years. You’re also an Architect – which came first?

I have been a professional Photographer and Architect for most of my adult life. I started in the architectural industry in 2001, working as a photographer from 2008 and becoming a qualified Architect in 2009.

During my time at various architectural practices, I was the photographer for both staff profiles and photographing their buildings for trade publications, and production of marketing materials. Building up over 18 years of experience in this style of photography.

From 2008 onwards I was learning my trade as an events photographer, starting with school proms. This gradually developed my skills in capturing genuine, naturally emotive images. I have become well known as a discreet unobtrusive photographer who lets events play out naturally.

This type of work led to larger events and wedding photography where my wide-ranging experience gives me a unique perspective on how to approach these very important personal events. With increasing photography workload and a passion for helping people capture the atmosphere and emotions of such important moments of their lives, I moved away from full time Architecture in 2020 to concentrate fully on my photography business

However, for me photography and architecture share many common traits, deep understanding of a client’s requirements, ability to work creativity under pressure, commercial awareness, deep understanding of shadow, light and composition with a highly trained and keen eye for detail.

 Have you always been creative?

I have been drawn to creative endeavours my whole life, and am well known by my friends and family for this – architecture and photography were both natural fits with my intrinsic creative approach. Alongside these two professions I also a passionate guitarist and enjoy writing my own music.

My creativity has resulted in myself becoming involved in the design, photography and music industry. All of which complement each other in sometimes surprising ways.

How far do you travel for shoots?

My typical range is Berkshire, London, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertford and Surrey, but happy to consider greater distances based on individual requirements. I have been known to travel South to Bournemouth and North up to Scotland for photography jobs, and will always consider any location and will do all I can to make it work.
